Ambassador Yao Jing's Speech at the National Day Reception in Peshawar

Honorable Speaker Ghani,

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,

Good afternoon!

This year marks the 70th Anniversary of founding the People’s Republic of China. Today, we gather here in Peshawar, capital of the historic and picturesque province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to celebrate the 70th Birthday of the People's Republic of China. On behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, I would like to extend warmest welcome and heartfelt thanks to all of you.

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,

The founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 ushered in a new era in the history of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The humiliating history of the Chinese nation being invaded and enslaved for more than 100 years was ended completely. The great historic event proclaimed that China has truly become an independent country, the Chinese people have become the masters of the country, and that the Chinese nation has won a historic rebirth.

Reform and opening up started in 1978 blazed a trail in building socialism with Chinese characteristics. After a long period of hard work, China's economic aggregate grew from 367.9 billion yuan (about 52 billion US dollars) in 1978 to more than 90 trillion yuan (13 trillion US dollars) in 2018, the per capita gross national income (GNI) has increased from US $200 in 1978 to US $9732 today, and the number of poor people in rural areas has decreased from 770 million to 16.6 million, contributing more than 70 percent to global poverty reduction. China has leapt from poverty to the world's 2nd largest economy.

In 2012, the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) opened up new prospects for various undertakings of the party and the country. United and led by the CPC Central Committee with General Secretary Xi Jinping as the core, the people of the whole country have pursued progress while ensuring stability, pioneered and pushed ahead, and made historic achievements in reform, opening up, and socialist construction. The socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, and the Chinese nation, with an entirely new posture, now stands tall and firm in the East.

In the historical process of standing up, growing rich and becoming strong, Chinese nation has been adhering to a basic rule: setting the people's yearning for beautiful life as struggling objective. The people are the solid foundation of the republic, and the people are the greatest source of confidence for our governance.

Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,

Over the past 70 years, China has pursued an independent foreign policy of peace and committed itself to maintaining world peace and promoting common development. We always decide our position and policy on an issue on its own merits. China's diplomacy emphasizes fairness, justice and respect for the right of people of all countries to independently choose their development path. We are committed to peaceful settlement of differences and disputes between countries through dialogue and consultation. We oppose the wanton use of force or threat to use it, and firmly oppose hegemonism. We actively advocate the building of a community with a shared future for mankind and are ready to work with people of other countries to create a better future for mankind.

Over the past 70 years, China has made outstanding contributions to the world economy and global governance. China's total economic output accounts for nearly 16% of the world economy; China's economy grew at an average annual rate of 9.4% from 1979 to 2018, much higher than the average annual growth rate of 2.9% of the world economy, and the annual contribution rate to world economic growth was about 18%. China is actively promoting the “Belt and Road” initiative and has received positive responses from more than 160 countries and regions. China has comprehensively promoted major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, advocated building a community with a shared future for mankind, contributed Chinese wisdom in maintaining regional peace and stability, promoted the transformation of the global governance system, and demonstrated the role as a major country.

Ladies, gentlemen and friends,

China-Pakistan relationship is not only a model of relations between countries with different social systems, histories and cultures, but also an outstanding banner of New China’s diplomacy. Shortly after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it established the diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. No matter how the international landscape, regional situation and domestic situation of the two countries change, China-Pakistan relations have been enjoying sound and stable development, and the two sides have always supported each other firmly on each other's core interests. In 2015, during President Xi Jinping's historic visit to Pakistan, the two countries announced the establishment of an all-weather strategic partnership, and China-Pakistan relations entered a higher stage of development. During the first year of the present Pakistani government, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Imran Khan three times on various occasions, and Prime Minister Imran Khan visited China twice. This year, Vice President of China Wang Qishan, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of China Xu Qiliang, State Councilor and Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi had visited Pakistan. The two sides have reached many important consensuses on comprehensively deepening China-Pakistan all-weather strategic partnership. Frequent high-level exchanges have led China-Pakistan relations to move forward.

The Pakistani government has repeatedly emphasized that relations with China are the cornerstone of Pakistan's foreign policy. China has always placed Pakistan in the priority position of China's foreign policy and neighboring diplomacy. As a pilot project of the “Belt and Road” initiative, the construction of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has entered a new stage of enrichment and expansion, highlighting areas of industrial cooperation, social and people's livelihood, aiming at benefiting more people. The cooperation between the two countries in the fields of culture and people-to-people exchanges, science and technology, education, military affairs and security has been strengthened comprehensively, making joint and important contributions to maintaining regional peace and stability.

Dear Friends,

This year is not only the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, but also a crucial year for the Chinese people to win a comprehensive social welfare society and achieve the goal of the first century. Under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with General Secretary Xi Jinping as its core, China is more confident and more capable than any time in history to realize the Chinese Dream of great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Our world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century. We firmly believe that China's development will inject more stability into the world's great changes, contribute more positive energy to the transformation of the international order and provide greater new impetus for global development. In this process, we are willing to work hand in hand with Pakistan to strengthen strategic coordination, deepen practical cooperation, jointly create a better future for China-Pakistan relations, and play a leading role in building a community of shared future in our neighborhood!
